Council to spend £150k repairing north-east harbours

Macduff Harbour
Macduff Harbour

Councillors are expected to back a repair and maintenance package for four local ports when they meet today.

Aberdeenshire Council’s Banff and Buchan area committee will be asked to approve a catalogue of works at Banff, Maduff, Portsoy and Rosehearty harbours.

A total budget of £153,000 has been set aside for this financial year, with £71,500 earmarked for Macduff alone.

In a report to councillors, the authority’s head of infrastructure services, Stephen Archer, says: “It is proposed that, as in previous years, the programme of works will be flexible.

“This will permit re-assessment of priorities for emergency works such as storm damage, which may require immediate action to maintain the structural integrity of the harbour.”

Among the planned works are £45,000 of dredging at Banff and Macduff and a £15,000 extension to the harbour compound at Rosehearty.

An additional £10,000 would be used at Portsoy, home to major events such as the Scottish Traditional Boat Festival, for works including building new boat compounds and maintaining the water and electrical points.

Another £26,000 would be spent at Rosehearty, where work was carried out last year to repair significant damage caused by the severe storms in December 2012.

However, the authority wants to complete repairs, resurface part of the compound and install temporary toilet facilities.

Councillors will discuss the plans when they meet in Fraserburgh today.
