Sporting star gets helping hand from housebuilder

He has already secured a place in Team Scotland for the Commonwealth Games.

But north-east para-athlete Lewis Clow is already looking to the future, which he hopes will include competing at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Now the Pitmedden teenager’s dream is being given a helping hand by building firm Barratt Homes, which is raising cash for him by selling furnishings at its showhome at The Grange, Elgin.

All money raised at the sale, which is taking place on Thursday, will go towards helping the 18-year-old make it to Brazil – from equipment to travel and accommodation.

Douglas McLeod, regional director for Barratt Scotland, said: “Lewis has worked extremely hard to progress his career as an athlete, attending events across the United Kingdom and beyond to pursue his dream.

“We have been very inspired by Lewis’ determination and we wish him the very best for his sporting career.”

Mr Clow, who was born with cerebral palsy, only took up athletics last summer, having previously represented the Scotland cerebral palsy football squad. He will race in the T37 cerebral palsy 100m at the Commonwealth Games, which begin next week.

He had his first big breakthrough earlier this year when he was given the chance to compete in two International Paralympic Committee athletics meetings in the United Arab Emirates where he won gold and bronze medals.

The qualifying events meant he was officially classified as a registered athlete, and he then successfully completed team GB trials in Glasgow and Sheffield.
