A home is being sought for a dog who gave birth in a police van after being abandoned in Aberdeen.
Sophie, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, was found in a distressed state outside Aberdeen Sheriff Court in April.
A passer-by had spotted the three-year-old tied up outside and realised she was in distress.
Already in the late stages of labour, Sophie was being taken to the Scottish SPCA’s rescue centre at Drumoak in the back of a police van when she gave birth.
Officers made sure the birth went smoothly but sadly two of her 10 offspring later died.
Now staff at the centre are looking to find Sophie a loving owner following her sad and stressful time.
Debbie Innes, assistant manager at the centre, said: “I’ve been with the centre for 10 years and I’ve never come across anything like this.
“Poor Sophie has had quite a journey after being abandoned when she was extremely vulnerable and forced to give birth in very sad and stressful circumstances.
“She proved to be a fantastic mother to her eight pups and now she has had that particular responsibility lifted from her shoulders she is free to enjoy life and all it has to offer.
All of the pups have now found loving homes but Sophie remains at the shelter.
The Scottish SPCA launched an investigation but the person who abandoned Sophie could not be traced.
Ms Innes said: “This amazing girl just loves to love and is ready to live again but, unfortunately, we’ve had no interest in her.
“It’s such a shame as she’s had such a sad time and truly deserves to find happiness.”
“We think she would enjoy being part of a family household, possibly with older children, where she can be her youthful, playful self and get lots of cuddles.
“Sophie would do best in a home where she can be queen of her castle and enjoy undivided attention without the distraction of any other pets.”
