Seven statues in Aberdeen have been cordoned off in case of “highly spirited” street celebrations once the result has been declared.

The council confirmed barriers were in place around key monuments, including Robert Burns on Union Terrace, Robert the Bruce on Broad Street and the William Wallace monument on Rosemount Viaduct.

The barriers are to stop people from climbing onto the statues and injuring themselves while preventing any damage.

A spokeswoman for Aberdeen City Council said: “Aberdeen City Council appreciates that spirits may be high and people may wish to celebrate the referendum result, so has taken this precautionary measure to ensure public safety and to protect the city’s statues and monuments.”

Other monuments to have been protected are: The Mercat Cross and Gordon Highlanders statues in Castlegate; the War Memorial on Schoolhill and the King Edward statue at the Union Terrace and Union Street junction.
