A man died following a two-vehicle crash on the A952 Mintlaw to Toll of Birness road last night.
And police today issued an appeal for witnesses to the accident.
Police were called to the scene just south of Clola around 10.20pm and were joined by a two ambulances and three fire appliances.
The crash involved a grey Vauxhall Corsa and a blue Ford Focus.
The Corsa was left on its roof on the verge as a result.
A police spokesman today confirmed that the male driver of the Vauxhall Corsa sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
He said: “The female passenger was conveyed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.
“The lone female occupant of the Ford Focus was also conveyed to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.”
A fire service spokesman said firefighters removed three casualties from one vehicle and made both vehicles safe.
Anyone who may have seen either vehicle shortly before the collision or anyone with further information about the accident is asked to contact police on 101.
