An award-winning north-east architecture firm has shown interest in the restoration of the Bon Accord Baths.
Kerry Smith and Jodie Black, of Kerry Smith Architects, Montrose, have been named as “conservation architecture” consultants by the Save the Bon Accord Baths action group.
Ms Smith, said: “At this stage I don’t know what my involvement will be. It’s very early doors, but it’s a good opportunity to work with a community who want to save a historic building.
“There definitely seems to be a huge amount of support, and hopefully this will help the group.”
Architectural assistant at the firm, Ms Black, studied how Bon Accord Baths could be restored and reused as part of her final year architecture thesis at Dundee University.
Ms Black added that for her university project she had been “looking at different uses for the building” in the instance of “a community based project” – such as the one instigated by the Save the Bon Accord Baths campaign.
She added that she would be willing to undertake drawing work should the campaign get the required support.
Ms Smith also has experience with historic buildings, having conducted a conditions survey on Drum Castle at Drumoak.
She said: “I do work on historic buildings as part of my practice. It’s good to invest in contemporary architecture, but if you actually have something like this (Bon Accord Baths) that’s an absolute gem, then it’s silly to let it go to wrack and ruin, especially in a city like Aberdeen.
“You could not recreate that building today.”
