Turning trash into cash! Fraserburgh woman banks lottery win after binning litter

How did a woman from Fraserburgh turn litter into £250?

Mum of four Angela Breward says litter has always “driven her crazy”.

Especially when she would head to a nice beauty spot and see it flying around.

But after seeing an advert for LitterLotto she thought it was a “great idea” and decided to give it a go.

The app involves people taking photos of themselves binning litter and submitting them to enter a lottery.

It was launched in partnership with environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful earlier this month.

Mrs Breward said: “The kids all do it, they help me take the photos on the app.

“Locally, where we live in our little village community, they do a litter pick every so often.

“They all go out with litter grabbers and black bags and it’s a great sight to see kids and pensioners and everyone getting involved.”

Litter is an issue say 87% of Scots

The app offers weekly prizes to encourage more people to bin their litter and offers weekly prizes ranging from £50 to £500.

This innovative venture is one of the many ways Keep Scotland Beautiful is tackling the looming litter emergency.

A national poll conducted by the charity earlier this year highlights 87% of people believe that it is an issue across Scotland.

Asked if she’ll be splitting the money with her helpful kids, Mrs Breward laughed and said: “Of course.”

She added: “It’s a good cause whether there’s a monetary reward or not, it’s something that everyone should do.”

What chance do you have of winning?

On their website, LitterLotto says the odds of winning change daily depending on how many people have submitted pictures.

It can be 1,000 people one day, and 2,000 the next.

But they do say the more you bin, the more likely you are to win.

In the future, the company hopes to roll out new prizes and rewards.

The LitterLotto app is available to download for free on the App Store and Android Store.
