An Aberdeen school has been given more time to make improvements following an inspection report.
Education Scotland examined Kincorth Academy in March, speaking to parents, pupils and staff, and published its findings yesterday.
The report calls for a more consistent approach to be adopted across the school to help youngsters develop their own learning skills.
Inspectors also found room for improvement in the school’s curriculum, which has suffered as a result of staff shortages in certain subject areas.
More widely, the report highlights a need for more self-evaluation on the part of the school to help improve attainment in the future.
The team also identified a number of strengths, including positive relationships between staff and pupils.
They found the percentage of school leavers who move directly into employment is higher than the national and local authority average in recent years.
Inspectors also praised the commitment of staff to improving the quality of learning at the school, as well as providing flexible and effective additional support for pupils.
The report concludes by stating that the school needs “additional support and more time to make necessary improvements”.
Angela Taylor, Aberdeen City Council’s education and children’s services convener, said: “We welcome this inspection report from Education Scotland, which has highlighted a positive atmosphere at Kincorth and the strong commitment among staff to improving the quality of young people’s learning.
“The school also received praise for its efforts to ensure young people leave school ready to enter the workplace.
“Work is already underway to address required improvements in exam performance. School leaders have looked closely at how changes to the curriculum and self-evaluation might help.”
Education Scotland will now work together with the council to monitor progress at the school.
The local authority is required to submit a progress report within 18 months when a decision will be made on whether another inspection is needed. Parents will also be consulted at this stage.
