Scottish Week continues with events around Peterhead

The north-east’s biggest summer gala continued yesterday, with crowds of people taking part in events around Peterhead.

Hundreds of families had flocked to Drummers Corner for the beginning of Scottish Week and the crowning of the Buchan Queen – 23-year-old care home worker Shauni Bremner – on Saturday, and the fun continued yesterday.

In the morning, youngsters were given the chance to learn more about Shell’s ambitious carbon capture and storage scheme, which the oil firm hopes will pave the way for the port to become a leader in green energy, and have fun while doing so.

As well as being entertained by performance troupe Theatre Modo and trying their hand at scientific experiments, children took on a unique version of pinball by transporting the ball – which represented carbon – to offshore storage sites.

Adults, meanwhile, had their choice of stalls at Scottish Week’s annual craft fair at the Palace Hotel.

In the evening, runners took part in a 5K marathon around the town’s Lido.

Scott Ross, Scottish Week vice-chairman, said last night he was delighted with the response to the gala events so far.

“So far, it’s going quite smoothly,” he added.

“I went to most of the events and there was a good, steady turnout of kids throughout.

“The Shell event was really good and totally unexpected. There was about six or seven stations set up for kids experiments and it was really good.

“And there must have been about 20 stall holders at the craft fair today, I went down just after 1pm and it was packed.”

However, Mr Ross added that programmes for this year’s Scottish Week have almost sold out and that most ticketed events – including a talent show taking place today – have already reached maximum capacity.

As well as the talent show, other activities today include a seniors open day at Peterhead Golf Club.

Other activities set to take place this week include the popular bay swim and raft race at the Lido on Thursday, followed by a huge fireworks display.

But the biggest coup for the organisers is the return of The Blades aerobatic display team, who are expected to wow the crowd on Friday with their world class daredevil skills.

The team were due to take to the skies last year, but their two attempts had to be aborted due to fog.
