Police investigate hit and run as cyclist says he’s ‘lucky to be alive’

A cyclist was thrown 6ft into the air in a hit-and-run accident on a busy road.

Duncan Wiseman said he was lucky to be alive after bouncing off the windscreen of the car which hit him.

He was catapulted off his bike and on to the road in the accident involving a silver hatchback.

The woman driver initially stopped to help – and tried to lift him off the ground.

But after other Good Samaritans also went to Mr Wiseman’s aid she vanished without leaving her name or address.

The former Turriff Academy pupil was cycling to work along Aberdeen’s Great Western Road when he was knocked off his bike.

The father-of-two, who lives in the city’s Countesswells Avenue, was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and spent four hours in accident and emergency.

His prized bicycle was also “smashed to pieces”.

Mr Wiseman had been on his way to James Dunn’s House in Schoolhill when the accident happened.

He said: “I was just past Mannofield kirk when I turned and I saw she was right beside me.

“I jammed on my brakes but it was too late and I went shooting across and hit the windscreen.

“I was very disorientated and didn’t really know what had hit me.

“She then came and tried to move me, which I’ve heard is the absolute last thing that you should do if someone might have internal injuries.

“There were two people behind me, one who was a first aider, who helped me.

“But when we looked for her she was nowhere to be seen.

“I had some bumps and bruises but I was very lucky as it could have been a lot worse – I’m lucky to be alive.

“I must have been about six feet in the air. One of the girls I work with said she had a friend who was paralysed because of something like this so it just shows how serious these type of incidents are.”

Other motorists put Mr Wiseman in the recovery position after the accident and called and ambulance and the police.

They also looked for the female driver of the silver hatchback – but she had fled the scene.

Mr Wiseman has now urged any other witnesses to come forward to help trace her.

Councillor Martin Greig, chairman of Aberdeen Community Safety Partnership, branded it a “shocking incident” and said he hoped that it would not put people off cycling in the city.

He said: “This must have been an extremely distressing incident for the cyclist, it’s important cyclists feel safe when travelling in the city and I hope this doesn’t put anyone off taking their bike.

“It was fortunate that there was some Good Samaritans about with the right skills to be able to help him, the consequences could have been even worse otherwise.

“I’m pleased that we have been able to increase the cycle lanes on Great Western Road but we need to ensure that drivers are also respectful to cyclists.

“I am told of near-misses again and again and we must ensure the safety of all cyclists in the city.”

A police spokeswoman confirmed that officers were investigating the incident.

She said: “We were called out just after 9am on Sunday to reports of a collision between a car and a cyclist.

“The cyclist was injured and taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by ambulance for treatment.

“Inquiries are ongoing to trace the silver car involved.”

Police have urged witnesses to contact them on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
