A north-east baker is hoping for a slice of glory after being shortlisted in the World Scotch Pie Championships 2016.

Scotland’s top butchers and bakers have been trimmed down by a panel of expert judges, who today announced the shortlist for the 17th edition of the annual competition.

Bruce of the Broch from Fraserburgh has been chosen in the steak pie and football pie categories, and the team hope to claim a prize at the ceremony to be hosted by TV personality Carol Smillie early next year.

More than 50 experts, led by head judge Ian Nelson, considered the entries from across Scotland. The panel was joined by a special judge – provost of Fife and football legend Jim Leishman.

The former Dunfermline player and coach described the competition as iconic and said: “The overall standard was excellent and I was astounded by the variety of products that were entered and just how serious the judges take the competition.

“The Scotch Pie is my favourite but I have a soft spot for my specialist category, the best football pie in the land and I now know that that I have tasted the best.”

Mr Nelson added: “Scotland is lucky to be home to some of the world’s most experienced and talented bakers and butchers. The competition, now in its seventeenth year, aims specifically to highlight those entrants that create world-class artisan products.”

The winner of the Scotch Pie category will be declared as the world champion at the awards ceremony which will be held on January 13, 2016
