Members of a north-east bowling club are celebrating news of a £7,600 funding award to ensure the future of their green.

Charitable body Sita Trust has donated the cash to Peterhead Bowling Club to level the greens at its St Mary Street home.

The project will allow the club to hire a firm to lay new turf and improve the drainage on the site.

Club president Robert Mackenzie, who is leading the project on behalf of members, said he is “delighted” with Sita Trust’s decision to invest in the greens.

Mr Mackenzie added: “Once again a big thank you to Sita Trust.”

The independent trust – which is affiliated with waste management company Sita UK – provides grants through the Scottish landfill communities fund.

Since the scheme was set up in 1997, more than 3,700 projects have benefited.

Last night Marianne Ivin from the trust said: “Peterhead bowling club are a very active club in the area and this project is a simple one but one which will make a huge difference to the game.

“Re-laying the edges of the green will ensure that play is no longer affected by bowls becoming un-playable and will allow the coming season to get back on track.”

Earlier this year another of Peterhead’s bowling clubs was handed a cash grant.

Victoria Bowling Club was devastated by fire in 2014 and the members have been operating out of a temporary clubhouse ever since.

During efforts to claim fire insurance and replace the historic pavilion, it was discovered that the lease had been transferred away from the council and no money could be claimed.

Nevertheless, earlier this month councillors agreed to back the club with a £40,000 grant.
