A Shetland teenager has been locked up for a second time this year after admitting causing “annoyance, inconvenience and needless anxiety” by making numerous nuisance 999 calls.
Appearing from custody for sentence yesterday, Lerwick Sheriff Court heard that Nathan Hilditch, 19, had just been released from a 12 week term when he re-offended between May 18 and June 2.
Hilditch, of Horseshoe Close, Virkie, also pled guilty to attempting to steal a vehicle from Dragontree Cottage in Virkie on May 26 and assaulting a man by repeatedly throwing punches at him on the same day.
Fiscal Duncan Mackenzie told the court that there was a similarity in the latest charges in that the purpose of taking the car was to simply to cause annoyance.
The court discussed at some length whether or not a psychological assessment of Hilditch had ever been requested.
At the end, Sheriff Philip Mann found that locking up Hilditch was the only option available for him to deal with his persistent offending.
“It is clear to me that the custodial sentence in March has not got the message through. You continued offending in the same way,” he said.
Imposing a 15 week sentence, the sheriff added: “You have to learn the lesson, it is as simple as that.”
