Signs on A82 says road will be closed… But they are wrong

Motorists who have had to suffer diversions because of the closure of the A82 through Glencoe all week will be pleased to know that the road won’t be closed tonight – despite traffic signs to the contrary.

The busy trunk road has been closed from 9pm-7am since last Sunday to allow resurfacing work – costing £250,000 – to be carried out.

But despite an earlier announcement that roadworks won’t be carried out at the weekend, signs have been advising motorists that the road will be closed.

Stewart MacLean of the A82 Partnership in Fort William said: “There will be no works carried out on the road at Glencoe tonight and it will be fully open. Erroneous information is worse than no information.”

This is not the first time that traffic signs have been wrong during the roadworks.

Drivers were informed firstly that the A82 would be shut from 7pm-7am, then when this was corrected, the signs read that the A32 would be closed.

The roadworks will close the A82 from 9pm to 7am each night – but not at weekends – until Monday, May 22.

A Bear spokesman said: “Traffic will be diverted via the A828 Ballachulish and A85 at Connel. There is a height restriction in place on the diversion route for vehicles over 13 feet nine inches at the A828 Connel Bridge, and motorists exceeding this should find an alternative route during working hours.

“Vehicles in excess of the height restriction can travel along the A82 to Tulla Cottage where they, along with motorists requiring local access only, will be stacked and escorted through the work site only when it is safe to do so.

“The road will be open to all traffic as normal outwith working hours during the daytime.”
