Highland and Islands MSP lauds region’s vast renewable potential as solution to energy provision

The vast options of renewable energy across the Highlands has been highlighted by a regional MSP to the UK Government as the potential solution to energising homes.

Jamie Halcro Johnston has highlighted the potential offering in a letter to the UK’s new secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy Andrea Leadsom.

Mr Halcro Johnson said the new Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm highlighted what could be a “significant opportunity for the UK”, but added the region required enhanced investment in the installation of technology.

The Highlands and Islands MSP argued the region already possesses the facilities, skills and expertise to provide services and hoped a boost in the number of jobs would come, should the UK Government follow up on his advice.

Mr Halcro Johnston said: “There is huge renewables potential across the Highlands and Islands, with offshore wind, wave and tidal already being tested and deployed in our waters. The new Beatrice site is a great example of that, and there are many more planned for around our coast.

“But if we really want to take full advantage of the potential of marine renewables, we need to ensure more of the infrastructure and hardware is built here and not abroad.”

He continued: “The UK Government has already shown willingness to work with the industry by unveiling the Offshore Wind Sector Deal earlier in the year and  I want to make sure we continue to take advantage of UK government support.

“The Highlands and Islands stands ready to make a very positive contribution, one which will benefit our economy through increased investment and job creation, and our environment through reduced carbon emissions.”
