Hearts supporters are raising funds to boost a Ross County-backed charity following crowd trouble at last weekend’s match between the two clubs.

The Dingwall club is today due to launch a major new appeal to raise money for cancer charity Maggie’s.

Supporters of Hearts have joined in with the fundraising effort following last weekend’s match between the two side.

The Edinburgh club condemned the “appalling behaviour” of a small group of fans who are alleged to have stolen a drum from a Ross County supporters bus after Saturday’s match.

The drum was later recovered.

David O’Connor, Ross County’s stadium and services manager said: “This fantastic gesture from a Hearts supporter just goes to show that the actions of a few won’t come between two clubs who have a long-standing mutual respect and friendship.

“This is a great example of the football family pulling together for good. The fact that a very important charity like Maggie’s will benefit from this goodwill is a huge bonus and I’m sure will be greatly appreciated by them too and help them keep up the great work they do in our community.”

Ross County will today launch their fundraising effort “Staggies for Maggie’s”, involving a five mile sponsored walk to raise funds for the cancer centre in Inverness.

The walk will take place on Saturday, November 21, ahead of Ross County’s home match against Motherwell, with everyone who takes part in the walk receiving a free ticket.

Ross County manager Jim McIntyre launched the fundraising drive yesterday, with Maggie’s Centre fundraising manager Andrew Benjamin at Victoria Park.

Mr Benjamin, Centre Fundraising Manager at Maggie’s Highlands, said: “Everyone at Maggie’s Highlands is delighted that Ross County Football Club has chosen to support Maggie’s.

“As a charity, we rely entirely on voluntary donations to be able to keep our doors open for people with cancer and their family and friends and to be able to develop the programme of support that we offer.

“We are hugely grateful for the club’s support and hope that as many Staggies as possible will join the Staggies for Maggie’s walk to help us make the biggest difference possible for people affected by cancer.”
