Scotland’s specialist fatalities investigation unit is continuing its inquiries into the tragic deaths of tots Leia and Seth McCorrisken.

The sister and brother drowned when the car they were travelling in crashed into Loch nan Druimnean, near Kilmelford in Argyll.

The children, Leia, aged three, and Seth, aged two, from the isle of Luing, were trapped in the car as it sank into the deep water of the freshwater loch.

Their mother, Hazel Lancaster, who was driving, managed to escape. She was taken to hospital in Oban and later released.

There have been calls by local people to have safety barriers installed along the A816 Oban to Lochgilphead road at the lochside following the crash.

But Argyll and Bute Council has said that no such action can be taken until the investigation into the accident has been completed.

A spokeswoman for the Crown Office said: “The Procurator Fiscal has received a report in connection with the death of a three-year-old girl and a two-year-old boy after an incident close to Oban on July 6 2016.

“The investigation into the death, under the direction of Scottish Fatalities Investigation Unit (SFIU), is ongoing and the family will continue to be kept updated in relation to any significant developments.”

The SFIU is a specialist unit responsible for investigating all sudden, suspicious, accidental and unexplained deaths.

A police spokesman said: “Inquiries are ongoing.”

Lead Councillor for Oban Lorn and the Isles, Councillor Roddy McCuish, said: “We will be looking at all aspects to make the loch safer but until the report is through it wouldn’t be appropriate to say anything.”

Councillor Elaine Robertson added: “There have been calls from locals for barriers.

“I spoke to Pippa Milne, executive director of development and infrastructure, about this tragic accident and she said they are working with police and nothing can be done until the inquiry is complete.”

Mike Russell, MSP for Argyll and Bute, added: “We need to know what the cause of the accident was.

“I had one or two people calling for barriers to be installed.

“If barriers will help road safety then they will be erected.”
