Attack victim Nicholas Ferguson was heading to work at the five-star Rocpool Reserve restaurant when he was set upon by James Taylor.

He said: “I had my headphones in and was listening to music walking down the lane between Tesco and the The Kitchen.

“James Taylor and Zeke McKnight were standing in the alley and I thought they were just two friends talking and when I got to them I was grabbed by my top.”

The 24-year-old said he thought it would be a fairly “mild” attack because he knew Taylor wanted money but his attacker continued to kick him in the head while he was unconscious.

He said he was coming in and out of consciousness and was shaken awake only to be knocked out again.

Help came when a member of the public saw what was happening and alerted security officers at Tesco.

Mr Ferguson said: “When the guard came out Zeke McKnight was pretending to be my friend while James Taylor was using my bank card.”

Mr Ferguson added: “James Taylor ran through the alley and kicked me unconscious one more time.”

He was left with a suspected broken nose, two black eyes, a swollen forehead and pain in his neck and back from being kicked in the head.

He said that the second attack on pilot Mika Ilvs showed the attackers “clearly didn’t care whether they are in trouble with the police”.

He said: “I’ve come across thugs before but I’ve never been attacked to that extent. I wasn’t scared approaching them but I’m a bit more wary now.

“I’m just happy that they were caught and sentenced. Hopefully three years in prison is enough to rehabilitate them but these days reoffending rates are pretty high so I don’t see it happening.”
