Serving members of the armed forces joined ex-soldiers, sailors and airmen to commemorate the fallen in Inverness yesterday.
They stood alongside people from all generations, and distinguished guests, as the ceremony took place at the Cenotaph in Cavell Gardens.
Just after 3pm, a hush descended, interrupted only by the distant sounds of traffic as proceedings were conducted by Reverend Alistair Murray, of Inverness Trinity Church.
Two pupils from Inverness Royal Academy, Mithran Macaden and Sarah Malhan, recited verses which poignantly reflected the occasion.
It had been a glorious sunny day, something not often enjoyed on Remembrance Sunday, as uniformed youth groups had led the preceding parade through the city centre.
Politicians, Inverness British Legion Pipes and Drums, and the Salvation Army Band, also marched from Huntly Street, at 2.30pm.
Provost Alex Graham said: “It is important that as a community we continue to remember those who lost their lives in the defence of this country.
“The Act of Remembrance continues to be of great significance to the people of Inverness, including the members and staff of Highland Council.”
Among those at the gathering were Val Sutherland, and his granddaughter 12-year-old Nicole Wharton.
Mr Sutherland, 71, was wearing six medals earned by his father-in-law, James Thompson, between 1939 and 1945.
He said: “This is the first time the medals have been on parade, having been in a box for 69 years, and I feel they should go to the younger generation.”
Nicole, a pupil at Inverness Royal Academy, added: “I only found out around a year ago about my great-grandfather and I am really proud of him.”
Elsewhere in the Highlands, numerous communities paid their respects at similar events, including the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge.
Army cadets and sea cadets, as well as Boys Brigade members were involved in an earlier commemoration at Lochaber in Fort William.
They read out 100 names of those killed in both World Wars, watched by Lord Lieutenant, Donald Cameron of Lochiel and Highland Council’s area leader, councillor Thomas MacLennan.
In Skye, councillor Drew Millar laid a wreath during a service at Somerled Square, in Portree, while a parade through Stornoway town centre was held.
