A teenager has been charged in connection with the alleged murder of a man at a Dundee city centre taxi rank just hours into the New Year.
The man was seriously hurt in the alleged attack at a taxi queue near the Overgate Shopping Centre on the city’s Nethergate at around 1.15am on January 1 and was taken to Ninewells Hospital, where he later died.
The 19-year-old is expected to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court today.
In the days since the death, police have struggled to identify the dead man, who is said to have been in his 40s or 50s.
However, in another development yesterday, police said they were now “confident” they know his identity.
The force reiterated that he has not yet been formally identified and said further details will be released once the man’s next of kin have been informed.
Police had released a detailed description in the hope a loved one would come forward.
They said he was wearing a two-tone light and dark blue Berghaus rain jacket, faded denim jeans and dark brown shows, as well as a “distinctive” Cartier watch studded with gold at the time of his death.
Detective Inspector Ross Fitzgerald from the Major Investigations Team said: “I’d like to thank the public for providing information to us so far.
“Our enquiries remain ongoing and we continue to follow positive lines of enquiry in relation to other people involved in the incident. I would urge any witnesses who haven’t already spoken to police to come forward.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101. If you wish to remain anonymous, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
The incident meant a stretch of the Nethergate outside the Steeple Church was cordoned-off for more than 48 hours following the death.
A significant emergency response was deployed to the scene following reports of a large scale disturbance just over an hour after the bells rang in the new year.
Locals said there had been a “good atmosphere” in the Nethergate area on Hogmanay – with bars yards from the scene packed with happy revellers earlier in the evening.
