WATCH: Tributes paid to boy, 11, who died in cycling crash

Tributes have been paid to a youngster who died while cycling with his brother and father.

Daniel Clements,11, collided head-on with a road sweeper while trying to avoid parked cars on a street near his home.

A pal who played football with the young lad, said he was “shocked” by what had happened.

Lewis Bexon Shaw, 11, a defender, for Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire where Daniel played, said: “He was a friend. He was a football friend.

“I had known him about a year. He was just very fun. He was my best friend in the whole team.

“I’m shocked. I couldn’t believe it. My dad has told the whole team, they are all so shocked.

“When we played football he was always there. He was a good footballer.”

A witnesses, who live near the crash scene described how local residents rushed from their homes to help the injured boy and his family as well as to console the visible shaken driver.

Krys Ward, 49, who lives opposite where the accident happened said: “It was driving through, it wasn’t driving that fast.

“We just heard a horrific sound. I can’t describe it. Just ‘what is that noise?’ There was the dad, the brother and himself. They were on the road.

“I’m just assuming it was a freak accident. I ran out, I helped talk to him and cover him. He was only 11.

“He was just lead there. Everyone was helping out. People were helping the driver, the dad, the boy.”

The mother-of-one, who stayed with the boy until he passed away, added: “He didn’t pass straight away. He was gone by the time the ambulance got here.

“If that was one of mine, I wouldn’t want him to have been there by himself. It’s hard to be with someone so young.

“I’m in shock. I don’t quite believe it. He was very brave. What his family must be going through, I don’t know.

“I just hope his mum knows that someone was with him till the end. He wasn’t alone. I wouldn’t leave him by himself.

“It was all a bit raw. It wasn’t pleasant. A helmet wouldn’t have helped. I don’t think anything would have helped.”

Krys added that there are often problems on the road, with a 30mph speed limit, due to the fact cars park on the side of the road.

She explained: “It’s a busy road and because of the how the cars park on that road side of the road it’s not easy for two way traffic.
