Mckay sees light at end of tunnel after scoring memorable winner

Billy Mckay enjoyed a prolific first spell with Caley Thistle.
Billy Mckay enjoyed a prolific first spell with Caley Thistle.

Caley Thistle forward Billy Mckay has always been convinced the Inverness squad is too good to go down, but the Northern Ireland international knows plenty of work remains to keep the club in the Premiership.

Mckay’s sublime overhead kick helped Inverness move off the bottom of the table, securing a 2-1 victory against Rangers on Friday night which ended a dire run of 14 matches without a win.

With only a point separating Caley Jags from bottom-placed Hamilton Accies, Mckay is refusing to get carried away, with Wednesday’s home match against champions-elect Celtic the first of 12 fixtures remaining for Richie Foran’s men.

Mckay said: “The squad is good enough – that can be seen from recent years where they’ve finished in the table.

“I think we’ve got too much to be in the position we’re in, but we’re in it, and it’s only us who can get ourselves out of it.

“Hopefully Friday night was the start of that. I think things have started to change in the last couple of weeks. Against Hearts last week we nearly sneaked a win. To get the win on Friday took us off the bottom of the league.

“I don’t know how long that will be for but we’re only looking up now.

“We’re going to be positive and try to get out of where we are, and try to get as far up the table as we can.”

Mckay returned for a second spell at Caledonian Stadium last month, with Friday’s winner his second goal since joining on loan from Championship club Wigan Athletic until the end of the season.

The 28-year-old netted 62 goals in 141 appearances during his first spell at the club and despite struggling to rediscover that form elsewhere, Mckay is confident he will pick up from where he left off before departing for the Latics in a £150,000 deal in 2015.

Mckay added: “The manager has brought me here to score goals. It’s what I’ve done the whole time I’ve been here, and that’s why I’ve come up here.

“I want to score as many goals as I can and help the team.

“There’s a lot of pressure on me. I know what the rest of the players are like though, I know they will help me out.

“Just look at Greg Tansey, he scored a great goal on Friday as well.

“The majority of the players are still here from my first spell, and I know they create chances. I know where I should be in the box when they’ve got the ball.

“There’s a few new players in the team such as Larnell Cole and Jake Mulraney. They’ve been superb since I’ve been here, so I’ve just got to keep myself in the box and on the move and hopefully I can get some more goals.

“I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing to help the team. Even if I’m not scoring, I’d like to think I can help the team in other ways as well.”
