Peterhead’s Andrew McCarthy thinks he’s returning from shutdown in ‘best condition’

Andrew McCarthy believes he is in a better place to show what he’s capable of with Peterhead.

The midfielder has been working hard on his fitness during lockdown to ensure when the new season starts he can prove his worth.

The January signing from Queen of the South struggled prior to football being stopped in March, but he’s determined that won’t be the case when the new campaign begins in October.

McCarthy said: “I am in a better place now. I’ve worked hard during lockdown and that’s what I needed to do. In terms of pre-season this is probably the best condition I’ve been in compared with previous years, so I think that will make a big difference for me.

“I was disappointed with my first couple of months at the club. My form wasn’t great and I was probably a bit too heavy and not fit enough.

“It wasn’t how you want to start at a new club, but hopefully from this summer I can start the new season in a better manner.

“We’ve got the dates for the League Cup and League One so hopefully that gets under way as planned and I can hit the ground running.”

McCarthy is one of 12 players from last season’s squad retained by Peterhead for the new season.

The 21-year-old added: “I can imagine it’s been quite a worrying period for quite a lot of players. I’ve seen the likes of my old team, Queen of the South, releasing almost all of their players.

“When you speak to guys I think a lot of them are worried, but Peterhead have been brilliant with me”
