Junior football: Shocks galore in Quest Engineering Cup

The opening stage of the Quest Engineering Cup produced surprises aplenty.

Culter bowed out at Arjo Wiggins Park where Stoneywood Parkvale’s Neale Davidson scored both the hosts goals on either side of the Crombie Park’s leveller from Ben McGregor.

At Heathryfold, Josh Petrie, Ewan Reid and Andrew Mutch found the net for Sunnybank after Charlie Fonweban had given Nairn St Ninian the lead.

Kyle Gauld’s effort early in the second half was enough to see Bridge of Don Thistle progress at the expense of Lossiemouth United.

Stonehaven needed penalty kicks to end the challenge of Deveronside after it finished 2-2.

Josh Christie and Adam Maclennan had twice given Hive the lead only for Rogan Reid and Michael Wood to equalise.

The home side won the shootout 4-1 with Derek Boylan firing the decisive kick.

Rothie Rovers also went through to round two on spot kicks at home to Longside after the sides had shared no fewer than 10 goals.

Jake Stewart (3), Murray Cormack and Kenny Mair found the net for Rovers during the game with Stewart, Keith Walker and Andi Bremner on target in the 3-0 spot-kick victory.

Also requiring a shootout were Buchanhaven Hearts, winning 7-6 against Banks o’ Dee after Lewis Brown’s counter for Hearts was cancelled out by a Sol Beagrie own goal.

East End won their shoot-out 4-3 at Colony Park after a 2-2 draw in which Jordan Lynch and Jack Strachan were on target for the Inverurie team. Josh Bolton scored both for East End.

Sam Robertson (2), Lyall Keir and Glen Donald scored as Dyce defeated Dufftown 4-1 with Callum Clark firing the visitors consolation.

A Callum Tremaine double, Frazer Thomson goal and Neill Irvine effort gave Ellon United a 4-1 win at The Meadows against Aberdeen University.

Maud’s Aidan Collin scored the game’s only goal at Pleasure Park against Cruden Bay while at Links Park Liam Bailey, Murray Soutar, Ryan Taylor and Keiran Thomson were the Montrose Roselea marksmen in the win over Banchory St Ternan.

Forres Thistle defeated 10-man Newmachar United with Matty Fraser, Ross Paterson, Neil Moir and Charlie Beck on the scoresheet while at Woodside, strikes from Murray Nicol (2), Jamie Brown and Luke Fawcett saw Glentanar through against New Elgin.

In the Championship, Jake West’s hat-trick saw Fraserburgh United move to second equal on points in the table after the 3-2 success at home to Islavale, for whom Finlay Milton scored twice.
