The captain of the first Scotland team to qualify for a football World Cup in more than 20 years has been named as the guest speaker for an awards ceremony in Moray.

Aberdeen-born Rachel Corsie led the side out for the matches that took place in France during the summer.

The footballer, who currently plays for the Utah Royals in the United States, has represented Scotland 113 times.

She will reveal what led her on the path to international recognition at the annual Sport Moray Recognition Awards, which will be held next month.

Kim Paterson, Moray Council’s educational resources manager, believes securing the guest speaker is a “huge coup” for the event.

She said: “Women’s football has witnessed a big upsurge following the televised World Cup and it is fantastic that Moray’s sporting community will hear Rachel talk about her amazing journey.”

There will be 13 awards handed out to the region’s sporting heroes in categories including junior, intermediate and veteran athlete of the year, school sport volunteer and community engagement.

Nominations are open until November 6, and forms can be submitted online at www.sportinmoray.co.uk or on paper copies available by calling 01343 563374.

The awards ceremony will take place on November 27 at Elgin Town Hall.
