Stockley shines in Dons win at Brechin

June 26, 2016

Aberdeen attacker Jayden Stockley scored on his debut as the Dons ran out 3-0 winners at Brechin City this afternoon. Lawrence Shankland got the second goal with captain Ryan Jack adding a third in a comfortable win for Derek McInnes’ side against their League 1 opponents. McInnes handed debuts to goalkeeper Joe Lewis and attacker Jayden Stockley and it was the forward who took his chance to impress as he broke the deadlock for the Dons in the 20th minute. The goal had been coming with Paddy O’Neil in the Brechin goal making two fine saves to deny Ryan Jack and Adam Rooney but there was nothing he could do about the opening goal as the City defence failed to clear Graeme Shinnie’s corner and Stockley was on hand to fire the ball into the net from 12 yards. The Dons doubled their lead in the 33rd minute when Lawrence Shankland, who spent last season on loan at St Mirren in the Championship, collected a Scott Wright cutback before beating O’Neil with an angled drive. New signing Anthony O’Connor made his debut in the second half in a central defensive role but it was the Dons who looked most likely to add to their tally. Stockley had the ball in the net again only for it to be ruled out for offside while substitute Cammy Smith struck the crossbar with an effort. Connor McLennan also struck the crossbar for the Dons in the closing moments as Aberdeen pushed for a third but the Dons eventually added a third when captain Jack slotted the ball past O'Neil in the final minute.
