Bold shades, bright whites and dazzling metallics were the order of the day as stars arrived on the red carpet at the 90th Academy Awards.
The multi-coloured swathe of gowns at the awards ceremony marked a change from the Golden Globes and the Bafta Film Awards, which saw stars wearing black in solidarity with anti-sexual harassment campaigns #MeToo and Time’s Up.
Leading the pack in the style stakes were Oscar nominees Margot Robbie, Saoirse Ronan and Sally Hawkins, each sporting very different gowns at the prestigious event.
I, Tonya star Robbie was one of the many celebrities who opted for white on the night.
The best actress nominee’s gown was cut in a strapless style with a draped, glittering sash across the front and shoulders.
Hawkins, who is up for best actress for The Shape Of Water, chose a fashion-forward sequinned dress with shoulder pads and a waist belt.
Lady Bird star and best actress nominee Ronan wowed in a bubblegum pink Calvin Klein dress with an asymmetric hemline and a billowing bow detail at the back.
Fellow best actress nominee Meryl Streep stood out in a scarlet red dress with a simple V-shaped neckline and full skirt.
Supporting actress nominees Allison Janney and Mary J Blige were among the most stylish on the red carpet.
I, Tonya star Janney looked striking in a bright red Reem Acra gown with long, draped sleeves and Mudbound’s Blige in a bright, white number with embellishments.
Previous Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence injected some disco-cool into proceedings with her chainmail-inspired gold metallic dress with spaghetti straps.
Another metallic look was worn by Lupita Nyong’o, who glimmered in gold, and Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot, whose silver sequinned dress was designed in a 1920s flapper style.
Jennifer Garner wore one of the most eye-catching pieces of the night: a royal blue dress with a full skirt, asymmetric neckline and a long train that trailed behind her as she walked the red carpet.
There were even more colourful looks from Nicole Kidman, whose midnight blue dress included an exaggerated peplum detail on the hips and a thigh-high split on the skirt, and best director nominee Greta Gerwig, who brought summer to the ceremony in a floral yellow frock.
Viola Davis sported perhaps the brightest dress of the day, a fluorescent pink dress with a matching clutch bag.
Salma Hayek and Ashley Judd went for power purple dresses, while Whoopi Goldberg – clad in a turquoise, yellow and purple floral-printed gown – wore one of the few multi-coloured dresses.
There was plenty of white at the ceremony, with best actor nominee Timothee Chalamet looking striking in a white tuxedo, and Laura Dern in a figure-hugging dress with an oversized detail on the shoulder.
Blush tones were worn by stars including Allison Williams, Elisabeth Moss and Mira Sorvino.
Male nominees and guests also made sure to show off their style on the red carpet, with best actor nominee Daniel Kaluuya sporting a gold suit, and Armie Hammer looking dapper in a red velvet tux.
Jordan Peele, who is nominated for best director for Get Out, rocked a crisp white suit and black bow tie.
Although the majority of stars at the Oscars were not clad in black as at the previous ceremonies, some were sporting Time’s Up pins.
Sir Patrick Stewart and his wife Sunny Ozell were among those wearing the badges, mirroring the trend on the Baftas red carpet, as well as Sam Rockwell and songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
Jane Fonda, who went for a striking white figure-hugging gown with sharp shoulders and a geometric neckline, also showed her support with the Time’s Up pin.
