Aspiring bakers could see their creation stocked in bakeries across the north-east thanks to a new competition run by local food festival Taste of Grampian.

Organisers of the event have teamed up with local bakery JG Ross to find a new product to stock in their stores.

The firm, which is the title sponsor for this year’s event, will select six finalists from the entries, who will then take part in a bake off at the firm’s headquarters on Thursday, May 21.

A final two will then be tasked with baking their creation alongside celebrity bakers at the Taste of Grampian event on June 6 at the Thainstone Centre, Inverurie.

They will be mentored by the winner of last year’s Great British Bake Off, Nancy Birtwhistle, and fellow contestant Norman Calder, from Buckie.

The audience of the bake off will choose the winner, and their creation will then go on to be produced and sold in JG Ross bakeries and Scotmid stores.

Both finalists will have their creation mass produced for sale by JG Ross on the day, and the mastermind between the best selling bake will get the chance to donate proceeds from the sales to a charity of their choice.

“We like to listen to our customer’s ideas and this is an excellent opportunity to see what exciting products they can come up with; the photography will demonstrate their own interpretation of the product,” said the bakery’s commercial director, Graeme Ross.

“We look forward to receiving the entries of our customer’s creations and crowing the winner at the final.”

Taste of Grampian event chairman John Gregor added: “If you fancy yourself as a baker, this is an excellent opportunity to showcase your creativity and bakery skills, as well as have the experience of working alongside the Great British Bake Off celebrities, at this prestigious food festival.”

Budding bakers have until 5pm on Monday, May 4 to submit their entry to the competition.

They must submit a recipe alongside pictures of their final product by e-mail to TOG@jg-ross.co.uk or by post to Dianne Smith, JG Ross Bakers, Highclere Business Park, Highclere Way, Inverurie, AB51 5QW.

Recipes cannot contain nuts or sesame seeds and all applicants must be available, if shortlisted, on Thursday May 21 at noon.
