New Moredun scheme seeks applications from farmers

Farmers and crofters looking to learn more about livestock health and welfare are invited to apply for the newly launched Moredun Foundation Award Scheme.

The scheme replaces the Moredun Foundation’s scholarship scheme and offers increased funding of up to £2,000 for short-term projects relating to livestock health and welfare.

The Moredun Foundation is the farmer-led organisation which governs the work of the Moredun Research Institute at Penicuik, near Edinburgh. It has more than 10,000 UK members from the farming, veterinary and associated industries, and is focused on improving the understanding, treatment and prevention of animal diseases through research and educational initiatives.

Its new scheme is open to applications from anyone resident in the UK over the age of 18, and offers funding for fund work experience, travel, or collaborations with science or the arts.

Moredun Foundation chairman and Aberfeldy farmer, Ian Duncan Miller, said: “We have been delighted by the quality of projects that the scholarship has supported over the past five years.

“It is hoped that its successor, the new Moredun Foundation Award Scheme, will continue to support individuals and is a great way for those interested in livestock health and welfare to pursue a short-term project and further develop their own knowledge and skills within the industry.”

Moredun’s director of communications, Professor Lee Innes, said: “Moredun acknowledges the value of education, experience and travel to improve understanding of the farming and livestock industries and provide individuals with the opportunity to further their experiences and personal development.

“We are very excited about the scheme and look forward to enabling innovative individuals to develop their own project ideas.”

Applications for the scheme must be submitted by Monday February 29 and successful applicants will be notified in writing by Thursday March 31.
