Work has started on a multimillion-pound redevelopment at one of the north-east’s best known hotels.

Around £500,000 has already been spent on the gardens and estate of Macdonald Pittodrie House hotel as preparations are made to add an extension to the historic building and add an additional 29 self-catering lodges to the grounds.

Company founder and chief executive of Macdonald Hotels, Donald Macdonald, said there were also plans to turn the current dining room into a library and create a new space within the extension for guests to eat overlooking Bennachie.

“This would allow for an additional 100 guests at large functions and weddings. Creation of a leisure centre is also being considered. The redevelopment is expected to take shape over a period of time during a number of phases.

Mr Macdonald said: “The opportunity to significantly invest in our Aberdeenshire hotel brings exciting times to Macdonald Pittodrie House. As one of the most historic and best-known buildings in the area, it is vital that we sympathetically acknowledge its long and rich past whilst securing its future as a leading hospitality destination. This phased project will ensure its ongoing place as an Aberdeenshire jewel of which we are very proud custodians.”
