Coll of the wild for Katie Morag fans

To some folk, the Isle of Coll in the Inner Hebrides is known simply by that name but if you’re young, and a keen book reader, you might know it better by a different name.

For many years, Mairi Hedderwick, author and illustrator of the hugely popular Katie Morag series of children’s books, lived on Coll and regarded it as a magical place to bring up small children.

In her books, such as the Island of Adventure, Coll is known by the fictional name of the Isle of Struay.

Coll is a beautiful place to put down roots. Famous for its lovely sandy beaches, large sand dunes and its population of rare corncrakes, it’s an idyllic location to bring up a family who can then create their own Katie Morag-style family adventures.

It’s not often you find a home for sale on Coll which is why, Ceol Na Mara, a spacious family home on the edge of the village of Arinagour and enjoying stunning sea views towards Arinagour Bay, has sparked a lot of interest.

Within easy walking distance of the local primary school, the modern, architect-designed house which has a guide price of £300,000, is ideally suited for permanent use and would make a lovely family home.

Nicky Archibald, who is handling the sale for Galbraith, said: “It is rare for a property that is only 10 years old to be available on Coll, especially one that is so spacious and situated very close to Arinagour, with lovely views and a large garden.

“The purchaser will be able to benefit from a very attractive and practical family-oriented lifestyle among an established community, or indeed could choose to let the property as a holiday let or on a longer-term basis.”

Ceol Na Mara, which was built to a high standard by the current owner, has three double bedrooms, one of which has en-suite facilities; a further single bedroom or study, a sitting room, a well-appointed kitchen and spacious dining room.

The dining room could easily be converted into a generous dining kitchen with the current kitchen providing useful utility space.

The garden, which extends around the property, has a good sized decked area, large lawn and a rocky outcrop forming a very attractive natural boundary with the land beyond.

There’s also an option to buy a further area of adjoining land by separate negotiation with the owner.
