A spacious, fully renovated family home, the Old Smiddy is a property with huge historical significance

It’s not every day that you’ll discover an old forge in your living room, or be able to use blacksmith tools as ornaments.

Welcome to life at The Old Smiddy, an aptly named renovated property filled with character and the odd horseshoe.

This five-bedroom family home can be found at Kinmundy, near Newmachar, and is full of surprises.

From exposed beams to your very own sauna, it would suit those looking for something that bit different.

Its quirkiness was certainly part of the appeal for Jilly Matheson, who moved in five-and-a-half years ago.

The Old Smiddy has provided a sanctuary away from her busy job as a crewing manager.

She is now on the look out for a fresh project and hopes to stay in the area.

“The Old Smiddy is unique and that’s what attracted me to it,” she said.

“You’ll never find another property like this and that’s what makes it so wonderful.”

The lounge and dining area certainly has the wow factor, which is evident from the moment you walk in.

There is a vaulted ceiling with exposed beams and you can easily picture how the smiddy would have looked originally.

A stove is set within the original granite forge, with the accompanying tools hung neatly in place.

“I don’t know if all the tools are original,” said Jilly.

“But it’s such a lovely reminder of the blacksmith at work.

“The tools will be staying put as I feel it’s only right that they remain with the forge, to be looked after by the next owner.

“They are part of The Old Smiddy’s history.

“I also have a letter containing information on the history of the house, which will be passed to the new owner as well.”

The lounge is a gorgeous cosy spot where you can relax after dinner.

It also makes for an impressive room where you can entertain guests, with ample space for dining furniture.

The dining kitchen has been upgraded and offers a more modern feel, with trendy grey work units and neutral flooring.

A butler sink adds to the stylish look and vintage storage units will be included in the sale.

The kitchen offers a more informal space for dining and will enable you to chat to guests as you cook.

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to entertaining as you could also enjoy drinks in the south-facing conservatory.

This is a lovely space which overlooks the gardens and will be particularly pleasant during the summer.

Three bedrooms can be found on the ground floor, including the master bedroom.

The layout makes The Old Smiddy particularly versatile for those who want to welcome visitors, including elderly parents.

The master bedroom has an en suite and sauna room right next door, allowing you to enjoy a touch of luxury.

There are also panoramic views on offer.

The remaining two bedrooms on this floor are both of good size and boast Velux windows.

There is the potential to use one bedroom as a further living area or home office.

Upstairs you’ll find two further double bedrooms which complete the accommodation.

The Old Smiddy is surrounded by mature gardens and drystone dyking, which is in keeping with the traditional look overall.

There is ample space for parking and the garage includes a workshop area.

The garage also offers a room accessed via steps, which could easily be turned into a studio or games room.

A paddock could be used for equestrian purposes.

“A lot of my friends have children and they have loved playing in the paddock,” said Jilly.

“There have been some brilliant barbecues enjoyed in the paddock and it has been great for bonfire night.

“I’ve loved the rural setting and coming home to the Old Smiddy is always special.

“I hope someone else will love it just as much as I have.”

Offers should be made of more than £350,000.
