A row has erupted between a group of north-east councillors over the planned name for a new residential street.
The road will form part of a housing development in Fraserburgh close to the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses at the port’s Quarry Road.
Members of Aberdeenshire Council’s Banff and Buchan area committee were asked to vote on two options for names after a list of suggestions was whittled down.
They were left with a straight choice between William Wallace Way and Wallace Way – suggested by the community council – and picked the former as their preferred option.
But Councillor Michael Watt has now suggested naming the road after Fraserburgh motor body building firm Gray and Adams, which is a major employer in the town.
He said: “I would like this matter to be referred to the full council as I am extremely unhappy at the way this has been handled.
“I was not informed of the decision to go with one of these two options.
“I’d like to see Gray and Adams, a local company which has been operating in the town for more than 30 years, receiving some recognition.”
But fellow Fraserburgh councillor, Brian Topping, said: “He has claimed that he was not made aware of these options, which is just rubbish.
“All the Fraserburgh councillors held a meeting to whittle down the numerous suggestions we received and he failed to attend.
“While I can see the merit in a street named after Gray and Adams, the roads department have already warned it could cause problems for motorists because the street in question is nowhere near the firm’s factory.
“What Councillor Watt has to now realise is that when it does go to full council it will still just be a vote between William Wallace Way or Wallace Way.”
A council spokeswoman added: “The committee was asked to select a name for the proposed street within the residential development adjacent to Quarry Road in Fraserburgh.
“The favoured options were narrowed down to William Wallace Way or Wallace Way.
“Initially, the chairman of the committee used his casting vote to select William Wallace Way. A further vote then took place to refer the matter to full council for determination.”
A spokesman for Gray and Adams declined to comment last night.
