Brave the rain and gale-force winds… Summer to reach the north on Wednesday!

Heavy rain and gale force winds will herald the start of June as we wave goodbye to a dismal May.

Forecasters predict better news is on the horizon though with a fine spell of weather moving into the north and north-east on Wednesday.

Yesterday the Met Office issued a severe weather warning for wind, which is in place from 4pm today until 6pm tomorrow.

It warned the public to expect an unseasonably windy spell across most parts of the UK, including Grampian and areas of the Highlands.

Forecasters said gusts of up to 60mph would batter parts of the country, accompanied by heavy rain.

Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson said conditions would begin to go downhill this afternoon.

He added: “It is going to be wet and windy right through until Tuesday.

“But there is better news on the horizon. There will be a marked change in the weather on Wednesday.

“It will be fairly cloudy but with some bright spells.

“Thursday is going to be dry with plenty of sunshine.

“It will definitely be more summery than we have been seeing recently.”

In April, Aberdeen basked in temperatures on a par with top European sunspots but winter bit back in May with outbreaks of hail and even sleet and snow.

Tom Tobler, a forecaster for Meteogroup, confirmed that  May had been colder than average, with more rainfall than usual.

In Aberdeen, the temperature was 1.2C cooler than the average May temperature of 13.5C.

There was also 50 percent more rainfall.

Mr Tobler added: “It was a pretty miserable month for weather and we are not going to see any improvement in the first couple of days of June.

“But it looks like things will improve going through June with some drier, warmer spells.

“The overall forecast is looking better for June but it will be a bit of a mixed bag over the next week.”
