Police have charged 12 men as part of an initiative to tackle drugs and antisocial behaviour in the north-east.

Officers, who run weekend patrols, teamed up with special constables in targeted areas where offences had previously taken place, last Friday and Saturday.

In Stonehaven, four men, aged 20, 21, 22 and 24 were charged with possession of cannabis and a 21-year-old was reported after being found with cocaine.

Police also picked up two teenagers, aged 16 and 17, as well as two men, aged 20 and 39 for antisocial behaviour in the town.

Officers also charged a 19-year-old man, who was found in possession of cannabis in Inverurie and also reported an 18-year-old who was penalised for erratic driving in the town centre.

Another 16-year-old in Huntly was charged with possession of cannabis.

Chief Inspector Murray Main urged people to avoid drugs and drinking excessively to prevent them from becoming involved in “altercations.”

He said: “We know communities don’t want this type of criminality on their street and in their areas.

“With their help and the information they are providing, we are able to target specific areas and deal with issues at an early stage, before they cause more concerns.

“Our new weekend policing arrangements allow us to work smarter, often alongside our partners to reduce antisocial behaviour, nuisance and violent crime.

“Taking illegal drugs or drinking alcohol to excess can make you more likely to get involved in an argument or an altercation, which could result in you or someone else being seriously injured.”

The chief inspector added: “Alongside our enforcement action, we are also working with our partners to develop innovative ways to divert young people and others from becoming involved in criminality.

“We also aim to help remove them from what can become a vicious cycle of antisocial behaviour, drugs and violent crime which can have serious consequences, not only for individuals, but their families, friends and communities.”
