A man has appeared in court charged with murder following the death of another man in an Aberdeen tower block.

Cieslar Bohdan was arrested last week following an incident in Donside Court, in Tillydrone on Thursday.

Police discovered a seriously injured man in a flat on the 15th floor, who later died of his injuries.

The man had now been identified as 44-year-old Aleksander Smerdel, who was originally from Poland.

Bohdan, 59, appeared in the dock at Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Monday charged with murder.

The accused, whose address was given only as Aberdeen, made no plea and was remanded in custody until his next appearance – which is expected to be within the next week.

Emergency services were called to the Tillydrone area at 2am on Thursday. Mr Smerdel was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Detective Gary Winter said: “Mr Smerdel’s next of kin has been updated and our thoughts are with them.

“We are content that this has been a contained incident however if anyone has information they believe may assist the police they are urged to contact officers on 101.”

Three people died in a double murder-suicide in the same block of flats two years ago.

Hugh Gallagher stabbed Tracy Gabriel and Keith Taylor in a frenzied attack before falling to his own death from the 12th floor of the building in July 2016.
