A charity group in the Blue Toon that offers a place for people to go to reduce isolation and loneliness has received a funding boost – meaning they will soon have a working loo.

Members of Peterhead and District Mens Shed are celebrating a £15,000 donation from the SUEZ Communities Trust.

The group have so far refurbished their site to accommodate work sheds, a meeting portacabin and a garden.

But opening times and member attendance has been restricted as there have been no water or waste facilities on site.

Now the group are preparing to use the funds to establish their water mains and sewage.

Chairman of Peterhead Men’s Shed, Allan Shepherd said: “This is going to be a milestone for us.

“Thanks to the Suez Communities Trust, our members will have access to a small and simple but very much needed facility.

“We have struggled without the use of water and sewage at the site since opening.

“Our members have been very patient, supportive and understanding during that time.

“But for those members who need it most, it will be the number one and two event of our year.”

The Mens Shed was set up to offer all local residents somewhere to take part in projects and feel less lonely.

Marek Gordon, chairman of SUEZ Communities Trust, which provides awards through the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund added: “We were delighted to be able to offer funding to Peterhead and District Men’s Shed.”
