Golfers have raised a record sum in an annual competition organised by north-east cancer charity Friends of Anchor.

The charity’s gala golf event involved more than 150 players, including Scottish professional Richie Ramsay, who managed to raise £112,000 for the organisation.

Now on its 17th outing, this year 38 teams took to the fairways for the tournament at Peterculter Golf Club, followed by a black-tie dinner for almost 300 guests at The Chester Hotel.

A silent auction was held, with lots including luxury accommodation, golf lessons from Mr Ramsay and football match hospitality.

The money raised will go towards the charity’s appeal to raise £2 million for the Anchor Centre – a new oncology and haematology centre planned to open at Foresterhill in late 2021.

Charity chairman, Jim Milne, said: “ The Anchor Centre is a long-awaited ambition for the north-east and we’re proud to be playing an essential part in its development by fundraising for the over-and-above elements of the project, which will not be covered by the NHS.”

Sarah-Jane Hogg, fundraising and development director for the charity, added: “ From the early start at the golf club through to the excitement of our main auction, our wonderful golfers and guests were in high spirits and have shown incredible generosity throughout.”

The winning team, Pure Class, was presented with the trophy by Mr Ramsay, who is currently on rest as he is nursing a knee injury.
