Aberdeen residents have been urged to help their local community by taking part in a 24-hour litter pick across the city today.
A number of organisations have already committed themselves to participating in the Aberdeen City Council-organised event which is designed to spruce up the appearance of the Granite City.
During last year’s initiative, a total of 263 black bags of rubbish were collected, along with larger items including a car bonnet, a doocot, a satellite dish, a vacuum cleaner, and four shopping trolleys.
The groups taking part this year include Friends of Walker Dam, Middleton Park School, Riverbank School, Kirkhill School, Hanover Street School, Cummings Park Community Flat, Airyhall School, Friends of Victoria and Westburn Parks, Orchard Brae School, Kittybrewster Primary, Brighter Bucksburn and Stoneywood School.
They will be joined by Heathryfold Park Steering Group, the council’s environmental strategy team, Cove community, RSPB Dolphinwatch, Spirit Energy, Beavers, Redmoss Residents Fit Like Joggers, Kincorth Community, Sport Aberdeen, Friends of Sunnybank Park and a number of Fittie residents.
The local authority’s operational delivery convener, John Wheeler, who is taking part in the litter pick, said: “It’s great that so many community groups come out every year to help keep our city sparkling and clean.
“This year, we’re asking residents to help out by picking up some litter near their home or workplace as every bit of effort makes a difference and we’re all responsible for keeping our city tidy.”
