One Aberdeen student said he was “close to calling it quits” on his dream job of making videos until he embarked on a university career.

Hal McCorry graduated with a first class honours media degree at Robert Gordon University’s afternoon ceremony yesterday, and is now preparing to enter the world of work at the Garthdee campus.

The 25-year-old originally attended the city’s North East Scotland College to study a creative industries degree, but left to find a job.

He said: “I left that course with no intention to go to university.

“But three years after working, things started to dry up when the oil downturn happened.

“I decided to finish my degree at RGU and my experience has been life changing, and I don’t say that lightly.

“Before, I was happy to call it quits on making video production my job.

“But the teaching staff here were amazing. I learned not only how, but why things are done a certain way, and what I could do to expand on my current skills.

“The course was more practical than I expected, some amazing modules were added in at the last minute and I got to do a lot of video and editing work.”

In his third year, Mr McCorry was part of a group that made a film for the school of health sciences.

The video was seen by RGU’s marketing team – who then offered the student a summer job.

Now, he will continue his experience at RGU in a full time role in the marketing department, a position he says he “can’t wait” to start.
