Aberdeen councillors have been recommended to approve plans to send 20 staff members on a fact-finding mission to northern Germany.

The aim of the trip, due to take place in April, is to visit nurseries in the region to help improve city children’s access and possibly expand outdoor play space.

Staff visited a kindergarten in Madrid in a similar trip in October.

A report to councillors on the education committee said the Germany journey would not cost the council any money as they had been successful in bidding for EU-backed Erasmus funding.

It reads: “Previous experience of expanding our outdoor provision in Aberdeen has had limited impact, highlighting several systemic challenges.

“The proposed study visit in April 2020 builds on the successful study visit to Saltamontes Kindergarten, Madrid, Spain in October 2019, which was also attended by 20 participants.

“There are no direct financial implications arising from the recommendations of this report as all costs for the study visit are covered by the Erasmus grant, secured in July 2019 (for) travel, accommodation, subsistence and training.

“Erasmus is a strategic arm of the European Union that provides finance for mobility projects that encourages practitioners to engage with their European counterparts.

“Aberdeen City Council’s early years team was successfully awarded a grant of 83,800 euros last July.

“This covers all costs for both study visits: to Madrid in October 2019; and to north Germany in April 2020.”
