Two men were airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary following separate collisions on north-east roads on Sunday afternoon.

Both incidents involved motorcyclists and happened between 12pm and 1pm in rural west Aberdeenshire.

One incident took place near the Bridge of Gairn, on the Crathie to Ballater stretch of the A93, and involved a Suzuki motorcycle and a Vauxhall Vectra.

The second incident happened on the Cairn O’ Mount, south of the Bridge of Dye, on the B974 road to Fettercairn.

The accident happened at around 12.30pm and involved two Yamaha motorcycles and a Nissan X-Trial 4×4.

An ambulance service spokeswoman said: “We’ve taken in a male casualty from each, the male casualty from the Cairn O’Mount has an ankle injury and the male casualty from Bridge of Gairn has a lower back injury and a chest injury.”

A police spokeswoman confirmed they were called to the Bridge of Gairn incident at 12.50pm, and that the man’s injuries were “not life-threatening”.

The A93 was closed for almost three hours following the incident.

Traffic was diverted onto the B976 and the A939 while the injured motorcyclist was taken to hospital by helicopter and police cleared the vehicles from the area.

The Scottish Ambulance Service also deployed a helicopter from Perth to attend the Cairn O’Mount incident.

The road was closed whilst the aircraft landed and the incident scene was cleared.

Both roads were reopened to traffic by 4pm yesterday afternoon.
