An Aberdeenshire town centre is in line for a makeover using the finest materials in a bid to revive its proud heritage.
The heart of Kintore could be repaved with Caithness stone slabs and small granite cubes around the A-listed Town House, which dates back to 1747.
The granite fountain is also be brought back to life with the top section lifted out of storage and reconnected.
Repairs to the stone steps on the outside of the building are also planned with new “vandal-proof” light fittings proposed for the protected property.
A planning application for the work has been lodged by Aberdeenshire Council and is due to be discussed by councillors in a few weeks time.
Talks will be held with Historic Scotland to ensure the work is sensitively designed and executed.
Chairman of Kintore and district community council Brian Johnstone said people in the town were very pleased that work might be carried out.
He said: “We are delighted to see Aberdeenshire Council refurbishing the area around the town house.
“The community are getting together to try and determine a use for the Town House and will hold their first meeting next month.
“It could maybe be used for weddings or as a rural museum but in the short term the outside is in need of remedial work as the surface is pretty uneven.
“It is a fabulous building and it would be nice to see the fountain up and running again.”
The proposals will be determined by councillors next month and a timeline of when work could start has not yet been decided.
Aberdeenshire Council’s head of property Allan Whyte said: “We have been working closely with Historic Scotland and the public to create this outline proposal which will go to committee in August.
“Any works which may need to be carried out would be temporary and the public would receive advance notice from the roads service who we would work with on any traffic management required.”
