Two Aberdeenshire libraries are giving away books to young readers this weekend.

Librarians at both Fraserburgh and Peterhead will be handing out 50 copies of the hit novel Diary of a Wimpy Kid to youngsters who visit on Saturday.

Released by Jeff Kinney as the first in an ongoing series in 2007, the story was adapted into a film in 2010.

A range of activities, including comic strip creation, book cover design and mask-making, will also be taking place.

Katie Norris from Aberdeenshire Council’s library and information service, said the event was a great opportunity to encourage reading in families.

“We hope that children and parents alike enjoy taking part in the activities we have set out in Peterhead and Fraserburgh,” she said.

The event is being held in conjunction with the Just Read campaign, which is encouraging parents to dedicate 10 minutes each day to reading to their children.

Speaking last night, Aberdeenshire’s head of service for lifelong learning and leisure, John Harding, said the aim was to stimulate creative development in children from a young age.

“Children of all ages should be given the opportunity to broaden their horizons and learn from characters’ experiences and perhaps some of the readers will be encouraged to start keeping diaries of their own,” he added.

Libraries across the north-east regularly promote reading through Bookbug Story and Rhymetime sessions for babies and toddlers.
