A north-east couple who toasted their 50th wedding anniversary with a party have raised nearly £6,000 for charity.
Gordon and Meg Campbell – who met at primary school and lived round the corner from each other as they grew up in Beauly – invited about 120 loved ones to their golden anniversary celebrations at the Meldrum House Hotel in Aberdeenshire this summer.
Guests were under strict instructions not to bring gifts, and were instead asked to consider making a donation to Macmillan Cancer Support.
The generous pair also made a donation of £500 to the charity themselves – bringing the total raised at their celebrations to £5,702.
Yesterday Mrs Campbell, of Oldmeldrum, said: “I never thought we would raise such a large amount, everyone was so generous. A lot of relatives came from up north, and it’s thanks to all of them that we raised that amount of money.”
The 67-year-old met her husband, 69, at school in Beauly but it was not until they had both left that they began seeing each other.
They were married at Beauly Church, Croyard Road, before enjoying a reception at the Lovat Arms.
In 1974, Mr Campbell was sent to Oldmeldrum by his then-employers, McRae joiners for six weeks – but are still in the town, 40 years later.
They have two daughters, Cheryl and Julia – who is involved with the local committee of Macmillan Cancer Support. Their son, Gordon, a corporal with the Royal Marines, was killed on a training exercise in 2006.
The couple, who have now retired from their business Cam Construction, enjoy spending time with their four grandchildren and travelling.
