Lorry smashing into house was an ‘accident waiting to happen’

A north-east family have described the moment a lorry ploughed into their home as “an accident waiting to happen”.

The cement truck left the B9001 Rothienorman to Forgue road at the Badenscoth crossroads around 4.10pm. It is believed to have collided with a car before losing control and veering into the property.

Emergency services were called to the scene and the female driver of the car was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with minor injuries. The lorry driver was not injured.

Helen and John Simpson, who live at the junction of the B9001 and the B992 Fisherford to Auchterless road, came home to find the vehicle in their front garden.

“We were out in Inverurie when it happened at my daughter’s ballet class,” said Mrs Simpson.

“We just came over the hill and saw the blue flashing lights at the junction.

“We’ve lived here for two years and we’ve been expecting an accident. We just didn’t expect something like this.”

The garden wall in front of the house has been completely destroyed along with part of the garden. Broken glass has littered the garden stones the family currently have down, and the whole area will need to be lifted.

Mrs Simpson added: “The lorry has hit the house and there are cracks inside which we’re hoping is just on the plasterboard, but we’re getting someone out to check it. It’s damaged the brickwork outside too.”

The family, who have two young children, said neighbours are also concerned about the road.

“Some people have written to the council in the past about the junction,” explained Mrs Simpson.

“We have two little ones, across the road has a little girl and there are two kids next door that go to the academy and wait there for the school bus, my little girl waits there for the bus. People drive down there easily in excess of 60mph, and the junction does creep up on you.

“Thankfully no one way badly hurt, it could have been a much worse situation than just a damaged wall.”
