Two Aberdeen art students have been recognised as rising talents of the textile trade.
Gray’s School of Art fashion and textile students, Michelle Hay, 21, and Rebecca Shaw, 22, have been awarded Educational Enhancement Awards by the Aberdeen’s Weaver’s Incorporation.
Fourth year student, Ms Hay, was presented with the Kilgour Medal, a certification of excellence and £600 for the work she has produced on the course.
Ms Shaw, meanwhile, was handed a commendation and a runners-up prize of £300.
Ms Hay based her portfolio of work around the classic German story collection, Grimm’s Fairytales.
She said: “Winning the award has benefited me greatly already and I am proud to have been a part of such a great award.
“So far it has allowed me to further my research by purchasing specific yarns for my final collection for my fourth year honour degree.
“In addition, it has helped to fund a research trip to London this month and some replacement equipment for my own knitting machine which has been a massive help to me and I am extremely grateful to the Weavers Incorporation for this.”
Ms Shaw said: “When I found out I had actually won the runner up prize I was so honoured as The Weaver’s Incorporation is a group of extremely talented people and I felt so pleased that they had judged my work as good enough to win something.”
The Weaver’s Incorporation is one of the seven incorporated trades of Aberdeen, and has been handing out the awards to students on the fashion and textile course for 27 years.
