Four charities have been given a cash boost thanks to the pedal power of cyclists in the north-east.

About 200 cyclists took part in the annual KT Bike Run last year, raising £5,500 by completing either a 29-mile or 13-mile route around Donside.

It brings the total raised for cancer charities and local causes over the last 12 years to £85,000.

Now urological cancer charity Ucan has been presented with its half of the cash, while the remaining £2,750 was split between the Guide Dogs, Alford Car Transport Service and the Rotary Foundation.

Stuart Mitchelhill, press and publicity officer for Alford Rotary Club said: “Last year’s run raised 10% more than the year before.

“The great thing about the KT is that there are three distinct groups. We’ve got the 29 mile run for keen cyclists, a 13 mile run mainly for families and then at the Grampian Transport Museum the track is open for very little children to take part.

“The parents know their children are safe as they are off the road, and that’s improved the number of smaller children taking part since we moved from Haughton Park in 2009.”

The event is held in memory of local doctor and mother-of-three Karen Teale, who died of cancer in 2003.

It was originally organised by a committee of ladies, but as went from strength to strength, Alford Rotary Club was asked to assist.

Entries for this year’s sponsored ride will open later this year, with Macmillan Cancer Support in line to benefit. The local benefactors will be announced at a later date.

The group hope that this year’s ride, which normally takes place in September, will attract more even more participants now that local bike mechanic Mark Munro has joined the committee.

Mr Mitchelhill added: “This is our certainly our biggest fundraiser.

“It’s a very popular event in Alford, with local cyclists and those from further afield, taking part.

“We’re hoping that with Mark’s expertise on the cycling front, we’ll be able to attract more groups of serious cyclists to take part.”
