Duff House launch Japanese exhibition for Coast festival

A north-east gallery will display a unique collection of glass works ahead of this weekend’s Coast festival.

The three-day annual arts festival launches on Friday, and the programme contains events based on the theme of light.

As part of the event, visitors to Duff House in Banff can view the work of renowned artists Keiko Mukaide from Japan and Scot Clare Wilson in a one-off exhibition.

The pair practice a range of different glass work techniques, and have selected pieces to display in the show.

Ms Mukaide, now of Edinburgh, has exhibited her work internationally, creating both small and large scale glass installations which are inspired by and respond to the natural environment.

One piece that will feature is Light of the North, which was previously displayed at the Tate St Ives in 2006. This large installation makes a nod to both Scottish and St Ives’ maritime heritage.

Ms Wilson, who also lives in Edinburgh, meanwhile makes the most of traditional glass blowing techniques to create contemporary pieces. Her latest work to feature in the gallery include a selection from her Cane Studies.

Their pieces will be on display at Duff House for this festival, and for the next six weeks.

Lorna Ewan, head of visitor experience, content and learning for Historic Scotland, said: “The Coast exhibition at Duff House, which will showcase the work of two renowned Scotland-based artists, is a first for the house, as it features an all glass art exhibition.

“Running for six weeks this exhibition, which coincides with the annual Coast festival, is the perfect opportunity for visitors to explore this year’s festival theme of ‘light’ in a new and exciting way and to discover more about the techniques used to create works of art from glass.”

As part of the festival, Duff House will be offering free entry on Saturday and Sunday to coincide with the launch of the new exhibition.
