George Whittleton lied to the authorities for two-and-a-half years, claiming a total of £17,978 while he was working at Asda on Riverside Drive, Dyce. The 65-year-old had not informed Aberdeen City Council or the Department of work and Pensions that both he and his wife were in paid employment. As a result he received £8,469 in council and housing tax benefits and £9,509 in pension tax credits that he was not entitled to. Whittleton, of 21 Gallowhill Terrace, Aberdeen, admitted two charges against him when he appeared at Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday. Sheriff Edward Savage deferred sentence on the pensioner until next month for background reports to be carried out.
